DIY Snow Globe Tutorial: Create Your Own Winter Wonderland

There’s something magical about snow globes that instantly transports us to a cozy winter wonderland. Today, I’m excited to share this simple DIY snow globe project that’s perfect for holiday décor, gift-giving, or a fun craft afternoon. Let’s create some magic!

What You’ll Need

Materials:

  • Clear plastic or glass globe ornament (fillable, with removable base)
  • Miniature bottle brush trees in assorted colors (I used pink, turquoise, teal, and silver)
  • White glitter or fake snow
  • Chunky iridescent glitter or confetti
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Distilled water
  • Glycerin (optional, helps glitter fall slowly)
  • Small decorative ribbon

  • Tweezer or small tool for arranging

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Trees

Start by trimming the wooden bases off your miniature bottle brush trees using scissors or wire cutters. You want a flat bottom, so they’ll adhere properly inside your globe. Arrange your trees in a cluster to see how you’d like them positioned – I chose a mix of pink, turquoise, and silver trees for a whimsical, non-traditional look.

Step 2: Glue the Trees to the Base

Apply hot glue to the bottom of each tree and carefully position them on the inside of the globe’s white base cap. Work quickly while the glue is still warm. Cluster them together to create a little forest scene. Let the glue cool completely before moving on.

Step 3: Add Your Snow Base

Once your trees are secure, add a layer of white glitter or artificial snow around the base of the trees. This creates a snowy ground effect and helps anchor your scene. You can use a small amount of glue to keep it in place if needed.

Step 4: Prepare Your Liquid and Glitter

Fill the clear globe portion about 3/4 full with distilled water. Add a tablespoon of glycerin if you want the snow to fall more slowly (this step is optional but creates that classic snow globe effect). Then add your white glitter and iridescent chunky confetti. Don’t overdo it – a little goes a long way!

Step 5: Seal It Up

Carefully lower the globe portion over the base with the trees, making sure no air bubbles are trapped. The water should fill the space completely. If there are any gaps around the seal, apply a thin line of hot glue or waterproof adhesive around the seam where the two pieces meet. Wipe away any excess immediately.

Step 6: Add Finishing Touches

Tie a decorative ribbon around the seam to hide the connection point and add a festive touch. I used a silver ribbon with “Believe” printed on it for extra holiday charm.

Step 7: Shake and Enjoy!

Give your snow globe a gentle shake and watch the magic happen! The glitter and snow will swirl around your miniature forest, creating a beautiful winter scene.

Tips for Success

  • Use distilled water to prevent cloudiness over time
  • Don’t overfill with glitter – less is more for visibility
  • Seal thoroughly to prevent leaks
  • Experiment with colors – traditional red and green, pastels, or monochromatic schemes all look beautiful
  • Add small figurines like deer, snowmen, or houses for extra charm

Creative Variations

  • Personalize it: Add initials or a small photo behind the trees
  • Theme it: Create beach scenes, autumn scenes, or spring gardens
  • Gift it: These make wonderful handmade gifts for teachers, neighbors, or loved ones
  • Size it up: Try different sized globes for variety

Final Thoughts

This DIY snow globe project is surprisingly easy and endlessly customizable. Whether you’re crafting with kids, making gifts, or just enjoying some creative time, these little winter wonderlands bring joy every time you give them a shake. The best part? Each one is completely unique!
