Step 1 – Reverse Canvasing

This is a fun and creative step that not everyone considers when crafting. You can take a regular white canvas of any size or shape and take the staples out of the back so you are left with the wood frame and canvas. Follow the remaining steps below so I can show you how cute this reverse canvasing was beneficial to this project!

Using a tool that looks like something would be used at the dentist I popped each of the staples out. Some were tricker than others so you have to be patient.
I traced the canvas because I wanted to save just enough for the size of the frame.
Cut out the size of the outside of the frame.
This will be your back round of your art. Put the canvas to the side for now and we will get back to that.

Step 2 – Staining the Frame

I used my Home Decor Folk Art brown wax that you can find here. I use this so much, so I have a large bottle!

With a paint brush you will brush a coat on all over the front, sides and inside of the frame.

Then gentle wipe off with a old rag or paper towel.

I preferred my frame a little darker so I repeated this step with 2 coats.

Once I got the stain color to my liking I put the frame to the side.

Step 3 – Napkin Decoupage

I ordered these ADORABLE napkins off Amazon. You can only find them on Amazon (that I know of) and you can find them here. You have a whole pack when you order but for this project you will only need one. – Actually a 1/2 of one so you can actually to 2 birds signs out of this. You will also need Modge Podge and a paint brush.

Open up the napkin..

Measure out from the front where you want the placement of the birds to me. This will be the center focus of your art so space it out accordingly to how you want it on the canvas..

Trace it out with a pencil on the back of the napkin.

Cut it out.
You will only use the first layer of the napkin. Gently tear it apart.
Put one layer of Modge Podge on the front of the canvas.

Very gently lay the top part of the napkin on the side you just put Modge Podge on.

VERY gently apply a generous layer of Modge Podge on the top of the napkin. I used my fingers because I had more control of the napkin not tearing. It will not lay perfect flat. In other words, there will be a little texture to it once it dries but this is very cool! Dry completley.

Once the napkin in dry on the canvas you will get your glue gun hot and ready. Next you will glue the back of the frame with a good layer from the glue gun.

Press down the printed side on the back of the frame so you will see the bird canvas from the front. Next I wanted a little wording on my art so I printed a cute saying out and ripped the edges and glued (Modge Podged) it to the front of my art.

You can use this document below to make one of your own too!

I ripped out the saying to give it a jagged edge to give it more rustic character.

And Modge Podged it on.

Steph 4 – Final Step – The Greenery

Next, I used some artificial boxwood greenery that I had left over on a plant and decorated the corner of the frame a little bit. I also added some left-over craft easter bird eggs to embellish it a bit. I used a glue gun to glue this one. This little floral additive added the perfect touch!

And it is complete!
