Materials Needed

Soup Can

Can Opener

Decorative Napkin

Modge Podge

Paint Brush

Small Drill

Wire

Flower Filler

Step 1 – Gather your items

Step 2 – Prepare the Can

You are first going to take the top and bottom of your soup can, wash and dry and set to the side.

Next find the seam on the can and push the one side closed and try to flatten as much as possible. It should be pretty easy to push together with your hands but use a tool such as a clamp if necessary.

Seal any seams with the glue gun.

Step 3 – Paint the Can

You can use one good coat of “Waverly White Chalk Paint.” I love this chalk paint as opposed to acrylic because the thickness allows you to get good coverage with one good coat.

Step 4 – The Napkin

After the white chalk paint coat is dry (you will only need one coat) you can grab your napkin, cut it in half and tear the first layer apart and use the decorative side for your can.

Gently tear the top layer off the napkin.
Modge Podge the soup can all over the whole can.

Place your napkin over the front side working all the way around to the back side of the can. Make sure it is straight because once the napkin in down you will most likely not be able to get it off without ruining it.

Press out any bubbles and smooth out gently. You can place another coat of Modge Podge on right away or wait until the first layer of napkin dries.

Step 5 – Wire Hanger

I had my husband use a small drill and drilled 2 tiny holes on either side of the top part of the can so I could use a thin wire to hand it. You can also try to use a nail and hammer a hole on the sides.

I used a piece of my craft wire and threaded it through the holes, tied and knotted it on the sides to secure it or hanging.

Step 6 – Finishing Touch

You can add some beautiful artificial flowers or real flowers to your vase. Remember we sealed the bottom of the vase with glue so the water wouldn’t just run out the bottom – Although a small hole will help so the water can drain.

I loved mine the most with fresh daisies because it was simple enough for the bright colorful napkin and grabbed all the right colors out of the napkin.

Creating a soup can pocket vase through a DIY project is not only a fun and creative activity, but it also allows us to repurpose materials and contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can transform an everyday item into a beautiful and functional piece of décor.

Remember, the possibilities are endless when it comes to crafting and we hope this project has inspired you to think outside the box. As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” So why not try your hand at making your own soup can pocket vase and see what treasure you can create?
