Looking for a fun outdoor project that’ll make a statement in your yard? This DIY scarecrow is the perfect blend of creativity and simplicity. Whether you’re decorating for fall or Halloween, this step-by-step guide will walk you through building a scarecrow that’s sure to impress.
What You’ll Need
Before you get started, gather these materials:
– Metal tomato cage or wire frame (3 rings work great for a tiered structure)
– Wooden or metal cross pole for the arms
– Clothing: a plaid flannel shirt, jeans, and a straw hat
– Straw or raffia for stuffing and detail
– One decorative pumpkin or carved jack-o’-lantern for the head
– Small embellishments like corn cobs or wheat
– String or twine
– Optional: LED string lights for illumination
– Optional: Small decorative bird figurine for perching
Step 1: Build Your Frame

To secure the top of the tomatoe cage I tied each top of the cage with a rubber band.

Start with your wire frame. If using a tomato cage, you’re already set with a sturdy base. Position it upright — this will form the body of your scarecrow. For extra height and stability, you can secure it to the ground or embed it in soil. I added a second tomatoe cage on top of the first for height.
Step 2: Create the Arms

Take your wooden or metal pole and attach it horizontally through or across the upper portion of your frame. This becomes the arm structure. Secure it tightly with wire, rubber band or twine so it won’t shift in the wind. The arms should extend outward on both sides, ready for dressing.
Next we will illuminate it!

Step 3: Stuff and Layer Your Clothing

I used an old navy sheet and draped it over the bottom part for his jeans

Layer straw or raffia inside the shirt to give it dimension and that classic scarecrow look. Do the same with your jeans — arrange them around the lower frame and stuff them with straw. The more straw you use, the fuller and more impressive your scarecrow will look.
Step 4: Add Texture and Detail

This is where your scarecrow comes to life! Poke straw out from under the shirt collar and along the edges of the clothing for that authentic scraggly appearance. Tie raffia around the wrists and ankles for added texture. Add corn cobs, wheat stalks, or other natural elements poking out from the body for visual interest.
Step 5: Create the Head
Crown your creation with a pumpkin! A carved jack-o’-lantern works especially well if you want to add personality with a face. Simply place it on top of your frame where the arms meet. If you’re using a plain pumpkin, you can draw or paint a face on it for added charm. I used a piece of styrofoam to hold my pumpkin head a little more secure to the tomatoe cage.
Step 6: Top It Off

Place a straw hat on your pumpkin head and secure it with twine if needed. Add a raffia collar or tie around the neck area to blend everything together. This is also a great spot to add a vintage brooch or other fun accessories.
Step 7: Bring It to Life (Optional)

A small decorative bird perched on the arm makes a charming finishing touch!
Placement and Styling Tips

Position your scarecrow near your garden, porch, or entryway for maximum impact. Surround it with seasonal pumpkins, gourds, or mums for a cohesive fall display. If you’re using LED lights, the contrast between the lit scarecrow and evening shadows creates a truly striking effect.
